Five Song Friday 4/14/17
Back with another five songs, but fair warning there's no Kendrick Lamar or Chainsmokers on here so please don't get on me for that. I'm listening to their albums as we speak so a review might be on it's way.
Party Favor- Wawa (Mar 2017)
From Diplo’s Mad Decent label, Party Favor is a quality DJ that is starting to make some real waves. He performed at the Mad Decent Stage at Ultra this past year and was recognized for having one of the best sets of the festival. This song in particular is an absolute banger. Extremely bass heavy, this song will undoubtedly rock your speaks (this was originally a typo but it's funny in that unnecessary abbreviation kinda way so I kept it in) in the best way. I’ve been listening to this almost everyday on my way to the gym and it works as well as any pre-workout. I’m in the process of watching the rest of his 2016 Ultra performance that I may or may not have been there for...my memory is a little hazy... cause you know... stuff.
Song: 8.5/10
Starely- Call on me (Ryan Riback remix) (Jan 2017)
I heard this song a while ago and never wrote down the name even though I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then it popped up on my friend's Instagram video and that little hipster voice in my head was all like, “Hey I heard this before because it matters who heard it first.” I did my due diligence and re-located this gem and threw it back on the playlist. Another song I didn’t realize was a remix until writing this but I feel like that’s a compliment to the production. For some reason the vocals give me a little bit of a Tracey Chapman feel which I don’t hate (Fast Car is one of the best songs of all time). Great song and bravo to Ridwan for picking a great song for a video montage subsequently reintroducing me to the song.
Song: 8.5/10
DJ Snake- Here Comes the Night (NGHTMRE remix) (Mar 2017)
DJ Snake is another DJ who had a great set, closing out Ultra with the last performance of the weekend. This is one of his newest song that has been subsequently remixed by tons of up and coming DJs. This remix in particular rose out of the fray like one always does and is a really great take on the original song. Not an overproduced remix like what can sometimes happen, but just enough of a twist on the original to make it unique and elevate it a little bit. I didn’t realize how much I liked this song until I caught myself singing it to myself like an idiot, but real recognize real so good job on making a catchy song.
Song: 7/10
Cheat Codes- No Promises feat. Demi Lovato (April 2017
Not sure how this one slipped through the cracks, Cheat Codes has been consistently improving left and right and Demi is a legit, mainstream star. So I have no idea why this hasn’t gained more traction. The only thing I can think of is the flooding of stars teaming up with DJs, Alessia Cara, Selena Gomez, Coldplay, etc. that kind overshadowed or desensitized people to this song. It’s a solid song no doubt but I don’t think it’s as strong production wise as the Kygo or Zedd iterations but it’s a still a simple and good song. I think it’s only a matter of time before Cheat Codes break through to the mainstream but probably not with this one unfortunately.
Song: 7/10
Bastille- Good Grief (Don Diablo remix) (May 2016)
Wow, does anyone still think about Bastille? They had that one song, Pompeii, that blew up and deservedly so, it’s an amazing song. But they haven’t really been heard from for a while now. Even though this song is a year old it just reminds you how good Bastille was/is. I enjoy the peppy-ness that Don Diablo brings to the song and how it really changes the mood of the original. Glad I found this one!
