Five Song Friday 3/17/2017

Soooooo, on top of posting 5 new songs every Friday and giving you some feedback, I'm going to go a step further and put all of these into one playlist via Spotify. Hopefully you can appreciate all of the amazing things I do for all five of you readers.

Morat- Como te Atreves (Nov 2015)

The Colombian Mumford and Sons is the best way to describe these guys. I found this song sometime over the summer and just recently put it back on rotation. With its folk style and banjo thrown in there with the weirdness of the lyrics being in Spanish make this an extremely interesting listen. I really love this song it’s similar but not identical to any other song I’ve heard before. Now if you understand Spanish the song is even better, with the lyrics explaining the awkwardness of seeing someone you used to date but the sound being super happy. I don’t know the contrast is fantastic. The video has a great feel that has that Mumford and Sons (hipster) feel as well. All around love this song and Morat, especially because it makes me think of Mouserat and subsequently Andy Dwyer and who doesn’t want to think about Parks And Rec?

Song: 9.5/10                                                                                                                              Video: 9.5/10

Noah Cyrus feat. Labrynth (Marshmello Remix)- Make Me (Cry) (Feb 2017)

Whoa, ok I know I put a lot of Marshmello’s stuff on here but I like his music soooo beat it nerd. I’ve been listening to this for awhile not even realizing that it was a remix. So I type it into YouTube to get the link and what so I find out? Not only is this a remix, but Noah Cyrus is actually Miley Cyrus’ sister! I didn’t even realize she had a sister, did anyone? Was I out of the loop? They look almost identical so it’s not like they could deny it if they wanted to. Overall both are good songs but I’m a way bigger fan of the remix than the original. The original is a little slow and kinda depressing. The remix livens it up a little bit and makes it less mopey and complain-y sounding. So Ima have to go with that one.

Song: 8.5/10

HVNNIBVL- Mutual (Mar 2017)

Brand new song from an artist I’ve never heard of but I wouldn’t be a good curator if I didn’t make sure it was worth your time. This is a groovy pop-EDM song that’s enjoyable and a fun listen. It’s not overwhelming as far as production goes so it’ll appeal to broad audiences and the vocals are seriously impressive. Even though I have no idea how to pronounce this DJ’s name they do a great job of at least catching my attention which counts for something I guess.

Song: 7/10

Kap Slap feat. Ezi- Gone (Mar 2017)

In the spirit of Kap Slap performing at JMU for their summer concert it’s only right I review one of his songs for you all. Debuting earlier this week Kap Slap drops a good one. Although he hasn’t really carved out a niche in the original music arena this one could be the one that takes him over the tipping point in popularity. Not the greatest lyrics but they’re carried through the song by solid production. The build-ups and drops are exactly what you look for in a EDM song, while feeling slightly generic I can still dig it.

Song: 7/10

Tep No- The Best Crew (Aug 2017)

As I was looking for another song it came down this song and the Shape of You Latino Remix which is great in it’s own right but I’ve already posted a Shape of You Remix so to avoid redundancy, boom! Here’s a new song that you’ve probably not heard before. This kind of reminds me of Are you With Me a little bit, which is a great thing because I absolutely loved that song. I always gravitate toward tropical house and with spring (minus the crazy weather VA is having) is just around the corner. Time for tropical house to come back and this is a great candidate for playlist rotation. While the video is mildly cliche, so is life and I like it that way.
