Five Song Friday 01/20/17
Back again FOR AN ASTOUNDING SECOND WEEK with five more songs from the past week that I've been listening to. It's honestly difficult to find 5 new songs that I genuinely like and have been listening to but if I'm complaining about having to listen to music I'm in a pretty good spot in life. So here's my musical taste, judge away.
Cheat Codes- Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On) Jul 2016
A throwback jam I didn’t know I wanted. I was going through my Soundcloud playlist just minding my business when this song pops up. A wave of that frustrating “where have I heard this before?” and being even further confused when you look at the release date. I’ve totally heard this song before right? I’m not going crazy? Right? Right!? These guys are really superb at reworking throwbacks you may have forgotten about (check their other song SEX) and tossing them back into your life. I love that they keep the Carriebean feeling of the original and update it with today’s sound. I’d be remiss if I didn’t link the original for comparison, which by the way, is still a great song. I will for sure keep this song on rotation for a while and I’ll keep an eye out for what Cheat Codes does in the future.
Raeve- Firefly (Oct 2016)
If you can’t tell that I’m a fan of tropical house yet, here’s more supporting evidence. I stumbled across this song as I was checking out Paris by the Chainsmokers. Whoever posted it put Chainsmokers in the title, there obviously to get more views. I guess it worked because I found it but that’s pretty messed up. It took me a little bit to scroll through the comments to find out who the actual artist was to quench my curiosity, and it was totally worth it. For some reason it does remind me of the other Fireflies song from back in the day but that may just because they have the same title and I’m an idiot but whatever. Another tropical EDM song to add to a chill playlist...bro. (felt like it needed that).
Trinidad James feat. Lil Dicky and Mystikal- Just a Lil Thick (April 2016)
I am soooo happy I found this. After posting a Lil Dicky song last week this popped up in my suggestions and I just had to check it. And come to find out, its one of the funniest songs/music videos I’ve seen in a long time. It really treads that line of being just funny enough to be funny and just good enough to be an enjoyable song. Throw in Mystical who, let’s be honest we all forgot about, and the nostalgia is too real. If you want a real trip back to the early 2000s listen to Mystikal. There’s not much else to say other than I’m not sure why this hasn’t gotten the same level of exposure as Save Dat Money because it should.
Snakehips feat. MØ- Don’t Leave (Jan 2017)
I don’t know who’s featured on more EDM hits nowadays MØ or Tove Lo, cause MØ has seriously been catching up lately. Who would have thought that she could branch out from the success of Lean On but she’s been on a roll lately. Snakehips, which first of all I didn’t think snakes had hips but I digress. They put out one of my favorite songs in All My Friends and they have, low key, kept putting out good music. This song has a similar feel to Habits but that was one of the biggest songs of 2014 so that’s pretty good company. If I were a cynical man I’d say MØ was stealing Tove Lo’s style but I’m willing to wait and see mo’ from MØ before I jump to any conclusions. If it’s on the radio in a week or two I called it! If not? I mean I’m just some random guy, what do I know?
Imperial March- John Williams (1977)
*Warning: Contains Trump Reference. For those of you who don’t know today is the official inauguration of the new president, Donald Trump. We’re all still waiting for Ashton Kutcher to reveal this was one long, elaborate episode of Punk’d...please...have you seen his cabinet picks, Ashton? Well here’s the song of the day as hoards of people scramble to form a rebel alliance behind Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come cause, I don’t know if you know, but there’s no jedis coming to bail our asses out.
