Five Song Friday 02/03/17

Well, if you wanted to distract yourself from all the craziness that's going on in the world you've come to the right place. Here are five songs that I've been listening to over the past week and I'm going to be offering my uneducated opinion on them.

DEAMN- Sign (Nov 2016)

Another mistitled click-bait song on YouTube that turned out to be really good. I can’t remember if it was supposed to be a Chainsmoker song but that’s probably a safe bet. After some investigation I was able to find the actual song and here it is. I really do like the song but I’m pretty sure some of that is because it has less than 20k views on the video and I like being a hipster. It’s a nice song especially if you like Kygo and are impatiently waiting for him to put out some new music. Definitely give it a listen and if it gets famous just remember, you heard it here first.

Song: 8/10                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Video: N/A (audio only)

Timmy Trumpet-Oracle (Dec 2016)

Another SoundCloud find that is super interesting. I hadn’t really heard of Timmy Trumpet before this song, but he’s been a pretty prominent EDM DJ that's had one or two giant songs. I heard this song the first time and didn’t like it. I couldn’t understand the words, I didn’t know the DJ, it didn’t have a strong vocal part to really grab me. With that being said the next day I caught myself thinking, “What was that terrible song from yesterday? I kinda want to listen to it...” I don’t know if it was some kind of masochism, but there I was listening over and over again. Now I find myself actually enjoying it. I like the Gaelic chorus underneath give it this weird “rave in Middle Earth” feel. The ride of the song doesn’t fluctuate as much as one would think with a EDM song now a days, but I think this is technically Trance not EDM but I find it impossible to really tell the genres apart. The video for this is just a patchwork of concert footage that doesn’t really do anything for me.

Song: 7.5/10

San Holo- Light (Jan 2017)

Yeah you read that right, San Holo. Despite sounding like someone 12 beers deep trying to talk about Star Wars, San Holo is becoming one of the more known artists on the scene. His sound especially in this song is really similar to Marshmello, another rising star. I’m really high on this song; it’s got great production, good vocal background, and a diverse sound, really everything you want in an EDM song. This song came out in November but I think there’s a lot of room for it to grow especially as festival season approaches, with Ultra kicking it off next month. I hope the push behind this gets a little bit bigger but who knows the internet is a fickle place.

Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared to Be Lonely (Jan 2017)

This song came out a week ago today and I still don’t know how to feel about it.I do like how, for a second there, it feels like “Come on Eileen” is about to start in the beginning. It seems eerily similar to the “In The Name of Love” just with a few more layers; the violins are a nice touch but the structure of the song is just too reminiscent his biggest recent tracks. The vocals are great though, they really carry the song for me, I just don’t  enjoy the drops, they seem late and clunky. I don’t hate the song, but there are few things that help me like. I like Martin Garrix I just don’t think this is his best. Maybe it’ll grow on me, I believe in second chances so please prove me wrong.

Luis Fonsi feat. Daddy Yankee- Despacito (Jan 2017)

I am officially back on my reggaeton kick and I couldn't be happier. For those that know me well, know that I usually go down to Honduras during the winter break. But since I'm an adult and winter breaks generally don't exist in the real world, I have to supplement my lack of travel with music. This is one of the biggest hits in Latin America right now, duh its Daddy Yankee that guy seems to do no wrong. Overall most reggaeton has the same messages like "hey girl, you look good, dance, club, kiss" and this has pretty much all of them. It's a fun song that makes you want to dance and live a little. The video hasn't been out a month and its raked in over 100,000,000 views which is pretty crazy. To be fair though, YouTube and music videos in general are more of a thing than in the States. (RIP TRL). Overall I love it and can't wait to listen to it on a bus in Honduras sometime soon.
