Five Song Friday 6/16/17

Future- Mask Off (Marshmello remix) (Jun 2017)

This is the second time a Mask Off remix has been featured on the site but this one is a little more in my wheelhouse. With Marshmello getting the honors of the official remix to one of the biggest songs of the last year, this, understandably, had very high expectations. Unfortunately I don’t think this met those lofty goals. Not that it’s bad but it’s not very good... I was expecting a lot higher energy in the drops but they were so understated that they provided little contrast to the feel of the rest of the song. I like the original and like the Kendrick remix but this one isn’t different enough from the original to feel like an imaginative and interesting remix.

Steve Aoki feat. Lil Yachty and the Migos- Night Call (Jun 2017)

Damn Steve Aoki comes through with the trap beat of the year. Would never of thought that he could/would produce a song in the same lane as what the Migos make but here he is collaborating with Migos and Lil Yachty which is pretty crazy. This seems much more like a Migos song than a Steve Aoki song which caught me off guard a bit. They are by far one of the hottest rap acts in the world right now so I feel like I can trust them to make hits especially in a rap landscape I honestly don’t really recognize. More trap than EDM but I think it’s still a solid song.

DJ Khaled feat Rihanna & Bryson Tiller- Wild Thoughts (Jun 2017)

I made the mistake last time not putting “The One” on here for the explicit opportunity to stroke my ego and get to say I told you so. With Rhianna and Bryson Tiller I think it’s hard to see this not making the rounds on the popular channels. It’s a pretty good song but it’s basically a remix to “Maria Maria” which is one of my favorite early 2000s songs. A little unimaginative but at least it brought that throwback back into my life. But at the very least get Carlos Santana in this video you're blatantly sampling from him throw him a damn bone. J Khaled has his kid in there you'd think he could have made some room for Santana. Good song, catchy, we’ll be hearing quite a bit of this one.

Jax Jones feat Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don- Instructions (Jun 2017)

Jax Jones is back to follow up “You Don’t Know Me” which was easily his biggest hit to date. It’s an interesting to see  how many of these mainstream superstars are crossing over into EDM, this being Demi Lovato’s second foray into the genre. Following the recent trend of caribbean inspired music this brings in some latin and island sounds to make a pretty solid song. Capping it off with Stefflon Don really completes the feel of the song and packages it up really nicely. Might be big, might not, either way this is still a good song.

Sam Feldt X Lush & Simon feat. INNA - Fade Away (Jun 2017)

This has all the makings of a sneaky summer song. It’s got that familiar summer/tropical sound with a simple yet relatable chorus. Sam Feldt is the master of amazing melodies so it’s not surprising that he would come through with a song like this. While it doesn’t blow my socks off I do like this one. I feel like it’ll get a good amount of plays but I think we’re still waiting for that summer EDM anthem.
